Playing Against Professionals
When one is still honing one's skills in poker, one will realize that playing against fishes may bring in considerable profits, but may not give enough challenge to highly develop those poker skills. Obviously, to become a professional poker player, one has to go up against professional poker players. Such poker players have a playing style which is described as "tight-aggressive".
Tight-aggressive players don't play in order to have entertainment. There are only two strong motivations behind the actions of tight-aggressive players. These are money and competition. When it comes to money, the goal is to win as much money as possible. This involves goading the opponents to increase the amount of money in the pot. At the same time, a tight-aggressive player plans to lose as little money as he can. And this means that he will not usually play garbage hands.
When it comes to competition, a tight-aggressive player plays a poker game in order to win. He has no need for limelight but he will have the mental discipline and the emotional readiness to take the winning pot. With such characteristics of the tight-aggressive player, is it still possible to win against them. The answer is yes, if one also becomes a solid tight-aggressive player.
To become a tight-aggressive player, one must have acquired all the knowledge about card odds, pot odds, probabilities of hands at the flop, and all other background mathematical information. And then, of course, one must have the experience to play against tight-aggressive players. This could be very expensive if one is not ready. To make oneself ready, here are the things that a poker player must keep in mind.
- When it comes to the cards that the opponents have, one must expect that the cards are good. But one must still think about card odds, too, because such professional poker players may be bluffing.
- When it comes to position at the table, the opponents usually follow the rules in playing cards at certain positions. For example, the poker player at the early position should avoid playing drawing hands.
- When it comes to pot odds, the risk is high and the pot size is small. But tight-aggressive players bet and raise when they have strong cards. If one has weak cards, one will have to cut the losses and fold.
To win against tight-aggressive players, one should be quick and sharp at discerning their playing styles and betting patterns. These opponents have reasons that are not emotional. And one must be able to pinpoint the reasons for their actions. At the same time, one must be aware that such opponents are also studying one's playing style.
